The Art of Bone Inlay: A Centuries-Old Craft from Jodhpur
A Craft Passed Through Generations
Bone inlay furniture-making has been practised in and around Jodhpur, Rajasthan for generations, with techniques passed down through artisan families rather than taught in factories. Each piece that leaves our workshop carries that lineage of hand skill.
How Bone Inlay Is Made
Artisans start with camel bone, cut and shaped into small, precise pieces by hand. Each piece is individually set into a pattern carved or marked onto the wood surface, then fixed in place with resin before the whole surface is sanded smooth and polished. A single coffee table can take days of concentrated, detailed work.
Why No Two Pieces Are Identical
Because every panel is set by hand rather than machine-stamped, small variations in bone shading and placement are part of the process, not a flaw. This is what gives bone inlay furniture its individual character — the same reason collectors and interior designers seek it out over mass-produced alternatives.
Supporting Artisan Communities
Working directly with artisan workshops in Jodhpur means the craft stays viable for the people who've spent years learning it, rather than being replaced by cheaper mechanised imitations.
